SEVENTEEN
LEAH WATCHED NAOMI as she visited with the other ladies in their community. It was truly amazing to see; they all talked with her and laughed like they had known her for years.
Even the widow Yoder, who had shown up with Benjamin about ten minutes after Dat introduced them all to Naomi, was showing a level of welcome that Leah had never witnessed. She and Naomi had been together much of the afternoon, talking like old freinden.
Naomi looked perfectly comfortable. She may have been naerfich about meeting Leah and her schweschders, but she was obviously enjoying the company of the other ladies in their community.
Leah had tried to keep an eye on her; to make certain she did not get overwhelmedâshe truly did look very fragileâbut she never appeared uncomfortable in the slightest.
She was in a different room each time Leah saw her. She also made strides to include Lillian, suggesting Leah's young schweschder help them in the kitchen. The next time Leah saw her, Lillian was wearing the biggest smile Leah could ever remember seeing on her face. She was clearly enjoying being treated more like an older maedel.
After she completed the task they'd given her, Lillian followed Naomi around the kitchen, carrying things Naomi handed her and chattering away about a dozen different things. She asked questions so fast, Leah was amazed Naomi could even understand them.
The other ladies were not bothered by this at all. They smiled as Naomi and Lillian walked by them and a few of them even laughed to themselves or to each other. Soon they were each taking Lillian off this way or that way, showing her how to do all of the different things they were doing.
Leah wondered why she had never noticed how much Lillian needed the extra attention. She had always made it a point to include Lillian as much as she could, because she was the only schweschder at home that Lillian had to teach her things, but Leah had never seen just how much Lillian needed the attentionâ and the affection.
But Naomi had.
Leah closed her eyes at the sudden rush of tears and lifted up thanks to Gotte for bringing Naomi here. Clearly she was exactly what this family needed and He had known that all along.
. . .
Naomi looked around the kitchen at all the wunderbaar ladies she had met and now considered freinden. She was comforted to find that she would enjoy spending time with her new neighbors and the other community members.
They told her of their families, of their husbands, of the work the new bishop was doing in the community. Not one of them said that she was gegisch for rushing into marriage with a man she barely knew.
And not one of them was pressuring her to marry a man she did not love the way a woman should love her husband.
The widow Yoder was clearly intrigued with her story. She had actually asked Naomi to repeat it for her. The first time through, the widow had sat there quietly rocking, while Naomi talked.
